Price Per Gocco Print, Broken Down

Friday, March 13, 2009

I ordered supplies a few weeks ago and kicked myself the next day when I realized I had not gotten the best deal out there.  With so many different package sizes and shipping fees, it can be a headache figuring out how much it costs to actually make one print.  Here is a break down of each supplier and their cost per print.  I included the sold-out shops for good measure.
For the SMALL size Gocco printers:
Dick Blick- currently out of Gocco supplies.
Ebay- prices vary but seem to be hovering around $25 for either a package of 5 screens or 10 bulbs plus shipping.  Very general cost per print would be $11.60 or so.
Northwoods Studios- only does 2 packs of screens and 4 packs of bulbs (2 prints).  With 2 packs of each in my cart (4 prints) the shipping came to $8.50.   Price per print came to $17.02.
Marlene Watson- screens and bulbs are currently out of stock.
Nehoc- It is my understanding that Nehoc is not able to ship Gocco to the U.S.
Print Addict- the prices listed include shipping to every country except Africa and South America.  Products come in "packs" and choices are somewhat confusing because the descriptions are not quite consistent but as I read it, each pack of 5 screens/10 bulbs inclusive of shipping is $46.50, so $9.30 per print.
Print Addict Japan on Etsy- packages of 4 screens and 8 bulbs are $50 plus $12.50 shipping.  That is $15.62 per print.
Thinkink-website is currently disabled.  Rumor has it they are all sold out of supplies.
Welsh Products- $24.75 is the price for 5 screens.  It is also the price for 10 bulbs.  Shipping is extra.  Price per print excluding shipping is $9.90.  Orders can't be placed online.
Wet Paint- screens and bulbs are out of stock.
For the LARGE size Gocco printers:
Letters & Print currently has 5 screens for $31 and 10 bulbs for $15.  You can only buy the bulbs if you are also buying the screens.  Shipping for the set is around $13.00.  That comes to $14.80 per print considering that 4 bulbs are needed for each large print.
Paper Source currently has 5 screens available for $38.00  They are out of stock in the bulb department.  Shipping for just the screens would be $8.00.  Price per print  is $9.20 plus bulbs.

So, there you have it folks.  If you have a small Gocco, Print Addict is currently the least expensive.  If you have a large Gocco, Letters & Print is probably the best way to go.  If you see any misinformation here or have any suppliers to add, please leave a comment.  Happy shopping!

I ordered a 15-screen bundle on eBay earlier this week and received it today. I was remembering the old prices and fretting that maybe I had miscalculated and not gotten a very good deal, so I went back to eBay and saw that prices had jumped another 33%! Prices are nuts.

Prices are so high. I'm so glad I stocked up. I'll be so sad when my supply goes down. Maybe that's why I've been so hesitant to use it.

I always use printaddict's own site for my supplies, she's great!

Azurerocket--I came across an old package of bulbs the other day with a price tag of $10.50 from wet paint. :(

Tina- I think you have a point here. It's sad, I'm not as "free" to print the way I used to.

Thanks for doing this - it's hard to keep track of how much things cost, and where to find them.

I too stocked up not too long ago and it's sad to see that everything is already at least twice what I paid for it.

Thanks for posting this! it's so disheartening, isn't it? I am down to my last 10pack of bulbs/5 pack of screens, and I am so scared to even open it!

One of the beauties of gocco, along with the ease of use WAS the relatively low price per print. Such is not the case any more!

From NEHOC the price is $35 for 5 masters and a pack of 10 bulbs $22 Australian dollars of course. Its all very expensive but I figure that if you look after your screens properly you can reprint from them which is goos though I do agree that being so costly does take the spontaneity out of the creative process as you feel the pressure to produce something of value to justify the cost. I try not to think about making mistakes as that puts pressure on you and you invariably make mistakes because of it.

Has anyone tried using PhotoEZ or StencilPro screens in the Gocco? They are exposed with sunlight, so no need for expensive (and toxic) bulbs. They also use water based paints (I'm not sure if the Gocco can use them), so everything cleans up with water.

dear katie
i am so glad I found this blog! what is the difference between B5 and B6 when supplies are listed?

Art Wall Katie said...

Anon-
The B5 is one of the large Goccos. The B6 is smaller. The B5 uses more expensive screens and 4 bulbs vs. the less expensive screens and 2 bulbs. I hope that answers your question.

Hello!
I've just recently discovered Goccos, and obviously am lusting after one. I was thinking of purchasing a used one somewhere, or having a friend in Japan search one out, but now I'm worried... what is the future of supplies? Will I just get addicted only to find myself unable to obtain screens and bulbs before too long, and I regret spending money on ebay or on the cost of shipping from Japan? In short, given the cost of these machines at this point, is this a bad investment?
Thanks!

Printaddict's current price is at $15.50 per print (w/o tax/shipping, as that varies by location)

I just tried to visit Letters & Print's site and it looks to be nonexistent as of today (replaced with a generic girl and links that just link to search engines).

would love to see a new late 2011/2012 price comparison list and find out how much prices have risen... though the resulting depression may take 'til 2013 to recover from.

You can most definitely use Stencil Pro high res for the Gocco! It is expensive, but you can cut each sheet into 6 pieces if you are doing just small areas (and that makes it about $1.60 per order or you might need some larger pieces so it would go up from there) -you just tape it to the gocco screen -(you can get plastic gocco screens). You do need to use Gocco ink, although block ink will work in a pinch, but takes quite a while to dry (like a couple of days).
